The Great American Comedy Festival is set to return to Norfolk, Nebraska, from June 12th to 14th, 2025, with a lineup of top-tier comedic talent to honor the legacy of the city’s most famous son, Johnny Carson. Held annually at the Johnny Carson Theatre, this festival continues to celebrate Carson’s enduring influence on the world of comedy.
The festival traditionally kicks off with a family-friendly Comedy Magic Show on Thursday, followed by performances on Friday and Saturday evenings, including a late-night show at the District Event Center. All main events are scheduled at 7 p.m. at the Johnny Carson Theatre. In past years, the festival has featured renowned comedians such as Robert Klein, Drew Carey, Brian Regan, Martin Short, Louie Anderson, David Brenner, Rich Little, Paula Poundstone, Preacher Lawson and many more.
This year, the festival will feature Yakov Smirnoff, the Russian-born comedian whose unique brand of humor endeared him to American audiences during the 1980s. Smirnoff’s relationship with Johnny Carson played a pivotal role in his career, with multiple appearances on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” helping to catapult him to national fame.
Smirnoff’s comedic style, often highlighting the contrasts between life in the Soviet Union and the United States, resonated with audiences and showcased his ability to find humor in cultural differences. His performances on “The Tonight Show” not only entertained but also provided insightful commentary on the immigrant experience.
Also featured this year, is James Austin Johnson, a comedian and actor currently in his fourth season as a cast member on “SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE.” Known for his prolific voice-over work in both TV and film, his acting credits include “BARRY,” “BETTER CALL SAUL,” “SHE SAID,” and “HAIL, CAESAR!”. He voices the Grinch in Wondery’s podcast series “’TIS THE GRINCH HOLIDAY PODCAST,” which recently wrapped its second season. On SNL, Johnson is widely recognized for his uncanny portrayal of Donald Trump. In 2024, he appeared in two Oscar-nominated films, voicing Pouchy in “INSIDE OUT 2” and making a cameo in the Bob Dylan biopic “A COMPLETE UNKNOWN,” starring Timothée Chalamet.
