Yakov’s Legacy…
In 1977, Yakov Smirnoff embarked on an incredible journey, leaving behind communist Soviet Union to chase a dream in the United States. Arriving with nothing but hope in his heart, Yakov took his first job as a humble bartender at the legendary Grossinger’s Catskill Resort in New York. Despite not yet knowing the language, he began sharing jokes with his customers each night. As his English improved, so did his popularity, and it wasn’t long before he took a leap of faith and moved to Hollywood. There, the famed Mitzi Shore, owner of The Comedy Store, saw his unique talent and encouraged him to stay, saying, “There is always a place for good and different.”
Yakov’s charming outlook on life as a newcomer to America quickly won over audiences, and he rose to the top of the comedy world. He graced “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” and appeared on countless television programs, even becoming a beloved character on “Night Court.” His signature humor led to his own show, inspired by his famous catchphrase, “What a Country!”
From there, Yakov’s career blossomed as he made his mark on the big screen, sharing scenes with legends like Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Richard Pryor, Meryl Streep, and Jack Nicholson. His TV special “Happily Ever Laughter” was named “The Best Special” on PBS in both 2016 and 2017. Over the years, Yakov has had the distinct honor of performing for four U.S. presidents.
Yakov Smirnoff has worn many hats—comedian, movie star, best-selling author, and educator. He earned a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and went on to teach at Missouri State University. Recently, he achieved yet another milestone by earning a doctoral degree in Global Leadership from Pepperdine University.
Today, Yakov’s journey continues to be just as vibrant. He’s happily married to his sweetheart, owns a 2,000-seat theater in Branson, Missouri, and travels the world sharing his humor at performing arts centers. Inspired by his studies in psychology and global leadership, Yakov is currently writing a new book titled “Unconscious Attraction: Why Does the Wrong Person Feel So Right?”
Yakov Smirnoff’s life story is a testament to the power of dreaming big. He’s made the impossible possible and continues to uplift others with his inspiring message that America is still, “What a Country!” Be sure to keep an eye out for an upcoming documentary on his remarkable journey.
