Yakov Smirnoff made the bold decision to leave the Soviet Union and pursue the promise of freedom and opportunity in America. With little more than determination and optimism, his first stop was New York in 1977, where he worked as a bartender at the iconic Grossinger’s Catskill Resort. Though he spoke very little English at the time, Yakov connected with guests through humor, telling jokes that grew better as his grasp of the language improved. His charm and wit quickly gained attention, eventually inspiring him to take a chance in Hollywood. It was there that Mitzi Shore, legendary owner of The Comedy Store, recognized his originality and assured him, “There is always a place for good and different.”
A photo in a Ft. Meyers, Florida newspaper inspired this unique work. Yakov loved how the September 11-inspired photo captured so many emotions – grief, hope, and love. The minute he saw it, he knew he had to paint it.
